Profile
Julius Martinkus (29 years old) is a third-year PhD student in Microbiology at Aix-Marseille Université, supervised by Eric Cascales and Dukas Jurėnas. He works in the joint CNRS/Aix-Marseille Université laboratory, the Laboratoire d’Ingénierie des Systèmes Macromoléculaires (LISM). He completed his bachelor’s degree at Vilnius University (Lithuania), where his thesis focused on the anthropogenic impact on antibiotic resistance in soil bacteria. His master’s thesis, also defended at Vilnius University, investigated the regulation of the type VI secretion system (T6SS) in Acinetobacter baumannii. He then did a six-month Erasmus+ internship in Eric Cascales’ laboratory, studying novel T6SS effectors and the structural aspects of the T6SS. Following this, he spent over one year at the University of South Florida, where he worked on the molecular mechanisms regulating blood vessel development and regeneration using the zebrafish model. His current PhD research focuses on the structural and functional characterization of novel T6SS effectors, their delivery mechanisms, and their role in interbacterial competition.
