Profile
Yoann Santin comes from Corsica (Porto-Vecchio). He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Cellular Biology, including one year (L3) on a bilateral exchange program at the University of Montreal (Canada), and his Master’s degree in Microbiology, Plant Biology, and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Sciences in Luminy (Aix-Marseille Université).
He completed his PhD under the supervision of Dr Eric Cascales at the Laboratory of Macromolecular Systems Engineering (Mediterranean Institute of Microbiology). His research focused on a bacterial weapon, the type VI secretion system, which can be likened to a nano-crossbow that injects toxic effectors into target cells.
More specifically, he uncovered the molecular mechanism controlling the size of this crossbow in bacteria to effectively kill its targets. He is continuing his work as a post-doctoral researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Géraldine Laloux in Brussels (Belgium), where he studies the life cycle of a predatory bacterium, Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, which has the ability to enter its prey to feed and grow.
The goal of his post-doctoral research is to identify the molecular determinants in the prey bacteria that promote both the predation process and the intracellular growth of the predator. It is important to note that this bacterium could be used as an alternative to antibiotics due to its ability to feed on human pathogens resistant to antibiotics, such as pathogenic Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
