Profile
After completing his studies at the École normale supérieure, Hervé Seitz prepared his PhD thesis under the supervision of Jérôme Cavaillé in Toulouse from 2001 to 2004. As one of Europe’s pioneers in microRNA research, he discovered numerous microRNA genes subject to genomic imprinting, characterized their expression patterns, and studied the epigenetic regulation of their expression.
From January 2005 to January 2009, he conducted his postdoctoral research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School under the guidance of Phil Zamore. By combining biochemistry and bioinformatics, he investigated microRNA biogenesis and contributed to the discovery of piRNAs (2006) and endogenous siRNAs in Drosophila (2008).
Upon returning to France in 2009, he rejoined Jérôme Cavaillé’s laboratory, where he focused on identifying microRNA targets. He introduced a new concept: the “targets” identified through molecular biology or bioinformatics are often functionally insensitive to the mild repression guided by microRNAs (the repression effect is dampened by homeostasis and does not result in any macroscopic phenotype). Since establishing his own research team at the IGH in Montpellier in October 2011, and with the support of talented and motivated collaborators, he has verified the predictions of this theory and is now exploring its biological implications.
